Let the games begin! Registration open to June 5th

Let the games begin!

Hello GBI Families! We're happy to announce that we are moving forward with the spring 2020 season, with some important changes noted below. We realize this may not be a perfect solution, but please rest assured that we will do our best to follow recommended guidelines as we navigate this season together.

If you have questions about any of this information, please contact the GBI board of directors here.

What's changed

In addition to the necessary social distancing efforts we're implementing and which are described in detail below, the following changes will occur for the spring 2020 season:

  • The spring 2020 season will now be referred to as the spring/summer 2020 season.
  • Registration has reopened and will close at 11:59 p.m. this Friday, June 5, for those interested in playing this season but who have not yet registered. Evaluations for these newly registered players will be from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, June 7, and players will be placed on teams shortly afterward. We are reopening registration for 2 reasons:
    • Some player families have opted not to participate due to COVID-19, leaving gaps on some rosters.
    • Other leagues in the area have shuttered their spring seasons, giving players from other leagues the opportunity to play at GBI.
  • Games are tentatively scheduled to start Monday, June 22, and end July 30. All teams are guaranteed to play 10 games; however, due to time constraints, a tournament for rec leagues may not be possible this season.
  • The concession stand will be closed for the spring/summer season. Vending machines are being added, and Friday evening cookout nights will also be added to the calendar once games start (more to come on this soon!).
  • All players must sign a COVID-19-specific waiver before games begin. Coaches for each team will distribute waivers, and they will be available during evaluations for newly registered players as well.
  • The fall 2020 season will shortly soon after the spring/summer season has ended, and we will send registration information once this becomes available.

What we're asking of you

For GBI families who have already participated in practices and plan to play the full season, there's nothing you need to do. For those who choose not to play the spring/summer 2020 season, we are asking you to please email GBI President Sammy Bryan and/or GBI Treasurer Aeriel Smith with one of the following 3 options by 11:59 p.m. Friday, June 5, so we can evaluate the number of teams we can field:

  • Option 1: You can request a refund for registration costs for the season, minus processing and convenience fees charged by third-party vendors to GBI.
  • Option 2: You can convert your already-paid registration cost into a one-time donation to GBI, in which case a tax-deductible 501c3 donation form will be sent for tax purposes.
  • Option 3: You can request to roll your already-paid registration amount into the fall 2020 season, which is tentatively scheduled to start in early August.

How we're social distancing at the fields

In an effort to ensure we are adhering to guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the State of North Carolina, we have developed a plan to ensure that the health and safety of our players and their families is our top priority. To that end, we have implemented the following precautions:

  • Bleachers will not be used during Phase 2 by spectators. They are only available to coaches and players for practices. During games, spectators should bring their own chairs to practices and games until further notice. Games occurring during Phase 2 will require spectators to sit around the outfield fence and up to the dugouts. No spectators will be allowed to use the bleachers or sit behind home plate, as this area will be used as an extension of the dugout.
  • Hand sanitizers will be distributed to coaches to use during practices and games.
  • Once a team's practice or game is complete, all participants and their families are encouraged to exit to the parking lot promptly to allow the next team(s) to use the field.
  • Dugouts will not be used during practices, and players will spread out their gear along the fences. We will determine dugout usage once games begin and/or the state progresses to the next phase.
  • Scoring booths will be limited to 1 person per booth.
  • Concessions will not open for the spring 2020 season. There will, however, be vending options and special-event nights where third-party vendors will bring in pre-ordered food. Vending machines will be sanitized nightly after games.
  • Ice will still be available for injuries and other needs in the concessions stand.
  • Catchers' gear will not be shared among players. Those who have their own gear can bring it to practice and games but cannot share it, and teams and leagues without individually owned gear or a sole catcher per team may eliminate the catcher position.
  • A no-handshake policy, which has been in effect since practices began, will continue throughout the season.
  • Bathrooms will be unavailable during practices. We will send an update on this once games begin.

Thank you for your patience and understanding!
